Student Journalist of the Year 2022 SPJ — Indiana Chapter

Judge comment: "Cate Charron’s reporting is thorough and well-written, a series of accountability stories that speak to the difficulty of student discipline as well as the impact on victims and the campus. She provided solid, in-depth reporting around the various issues as she covered a case involving a star in one of the university’s premier programs. She showed persistence as she followed the stories for six months, challenging the policy of her college administration and providing a variety of student perspectives. Excellent work."

Judge comment: "Cate’s in-depth stories about the saga of a sexual assault, the ramifications of which unfolded over years — with one student found guilty of sexual assault and suspended, and suspended again — were examples of dogged and persistent reporting efforts. The details and degree to which Cate explores the truth, and the lengths she goes to to see where things stand today are extraordinary. That she also went to great effort to get Chris Parker to talk (the story said she reached out nine times) is commendable."

Reveille Seven Courage in Student Journalism Award Student Press Law Center

SPLC: "The Indiana Daily Student and reporter Cate Charron received the 2022 Reveille Seven Courage in Student Journalism Award for her six-month investigation into why Indiana University did not abide by its 2016 disciplinary ruling against a music student who was found responsible for sexually harassing another student. The investigation also explored how the music school’s continued relationship with the assailant, in violation of its own policies, impacted other students’ feelings of safety.

Charron persevered in her reporting through a series of follow-up stories, despite IU’s refusal to release the student’s disciplinary records — an act Indiana’s Public Access Counselor said violated the state’s public records law. Charron’s bold reporting led to numerous letters to the editor, a community forum, and protests in which frustrated students voiced their demands that the university do more to protect sexual assault survivors."
